Eventually it reaches one of the many the waste water treatment works across the UK.
Once treated, sewage produces a bio-solid by-product; sludge. The water and sewerage companies re-cycle much of the sludge, turning it into useable substances and as part of these processes, the bio-solids are often transported in tankers.
Clearly sludge supply chains must be managed so as not to endanger human health or harm the environment. All regulatory and legislative controls must also be met and the total cost of the operations need to make long term commercial sense as well as be sustainable.
Getting such complex supply chains right needs experience and knowledge from making sure the tankering transport network operates to the best possible levels of efficiency through to ensuring odours are minimised and all industry Codes of Practice are being followed.
